The dresser that takes up half the wall, drawers that jam just when you’re in a hurry, and that narrow passage at the foot of the bed: in a small bedroom, every piece of furniture matters. For years, this bulky storage unit remained untouched, for fear of running out of space for clothes. Then IKEA launched a collection of folding furniture designed for small spaces. Suddenly, we began looking at its dresser with new eyes.
Like many tenants, we move often and know by heart the hassle of dismantling a dresser, lost screws, and damaged panels. The Swedish retailer says it heard this weariness with its new collection IKEA KOMPISHÄNG, furniture that no longer disassembles but folds up and can be carried by hand. The idea seems tailor-made for a tiny bedroom. The question was whether it could truly replace a traditional storage piece.
IKEA KOMPISHÄNG, folding furniture to free up small spaces
The KOMPISHÄNG collection includes 13 foldable and portable furniture and accessory pieces, designed to fold in a few moves, slip into a closet, or be carried from one home to another without a truck or screwdriver, according to the IKEA France press release. It includes a compact desk, a mattress/sofa, stackable stools, a side table, organizers, and even bookends. In France, the retailer announces availability starting August 2026.
These solid pine pieces and light textiles lean toward a simple design, with touches of red or green, to curb the visual clutter in small spaces. They were designed by young designers such as Dora Ding and Ina Tidbeck Sjöblom, aged 20 to 28, who are intimately familiar with life in a studio, shared flats, and short-term leases. Everything is conceived to follow its inhabitants, from the first student studio to the next move.
Replacing your dresser with KOMPISHÄNG storage in the bedroom
In practice, replacing a dresser with lighter storage often begins with a decluttering: everyday clothes, seasonal laundry, items to donate. For what remains in the room, a hanging organizer KOMPISHÄNG, designed to attach to a rod, can take over. Priced at €14.99, it accommodates T-shirts, light sweaters, and accessories in several soft compartments and frees up an entire wall space.
In place of the dresser, a KOMPISHÄNG side table, sold at €39.99, can be paired with a set of two stackable stools at €49.99. The table serves as a wide nightstand for the lamp, books, and a plant, while the stools tuck away underneath when no one sits. Their lightweight frame is easy to carry from room to room, and once stacked, they take up barely more space than a single chair.
The KOMPISHÄNG models useful in a bedroom and their prices
For a bedroom where every centimeter counts, several pieces in the range prove particularly suitable. IKEA highlights a foldable desk at €89.99, which folds away when not in use, and the mattress/sofa at €139, usable as a bench or extra sleeping surface. To help navigate, here are a few combinations around the bed.
- a hanging organizer at €14.99 to replace a drawer for lightweight clothes;
- the side table at €39.99 with the stackable stools at €49.99 to create a seating area without weighing down the room.
These pieces are mainly aimed at mobile renters, students, or young professionals who move to different cities and live in studios or shared flats, as described by IKEA in its presentation of KOMPISHÄNG. The idea: lightweight furnishings that follow every move and free up space on a daily basis.
