In many Idaho vegetable gardens, everything seems perfect: sunny days, cool nights, rows of cabbages, broccoli, or kale thriving. Then, within a few days, the leaves become peppered with holes, the heads grow dirty, and sometimes an entire plant topples. The cause? Three tiny caterpillars, very different yet often mistaken for one another, who adore this climate and turn harvests into nocturnal snacks.

For a gardener, these “cabbage worms” all look alike, though they do not attack at exactly the same time, nor in the same manner. The temperate Idaho summers, with warm days and cool nights, are welcoming to cabbages, cauliflower, broccoli, and other brassicas, but also to these larvae. The imported cabbageworm, a small white butterfly active in daylight, lays eggs starting in spring and yields several overlapping generations. The cabbage looper, derived from a brown nocturnal moth, often appears later, as does the diamondback moth, capable of several cycles during warm years.

All three target the same hosts: cabbages, kale, turnips, mustard, and wild crucifers that serve as stepping stones around the garden. The leaves become covered with large irregular holes, or with a “stained-glass” effect where only the thin skin remains, typical of the diamondback moth. The caterpillars sometimes bore into young heads and leave green, damp droppings, reducing photosynthesis and opening the door to rots.

The imported cabbageworm is the larva of a small, highly visible white butterfly in the garden, with the tip of its forewings black. The female lays pale yellow, torpedo-shaped eggs singly under leaves. After a few days, velvety green caterpillars about three centimeters long hatch, with a fine yellow line along their back, which widely chews the leaf blade and can bore into the cabbage head.

The cabbage looper emerges from a brown night-flying moth. Its eggs, laid singly or in small groups, give pale green caterpillars that move in a looping fashion, like a measuring worm, due to the absence of true legs in the middle of the body. They often stay under the leaf and leave large, irregular holes. The larva of the diamondback moth, much smaller, trembles, can suspend from a thread when touched, and mainly produces the stained-glass effect on young plants.

A Simple Action Plan Against Cabbage Caterpillars in Idaho

The recommendations from the Idaho Master Gardener Handbook and the University of Idaho Extension converge on a single routine. Start with frequent observation: inspect the undersides of leaves at least once a week in spring, then twice weekly as temperatures rise, and manually remove eggs and small caterpillars. Install insect netting or floating row covers shortly after planting, burying or tucking the edges well to prevent butterfly entry.

Maintaining the garden reduces pressure: remove crop debris where chrysalises overwinter and pull out wild crucifers, such as spontaneous mustards. For heavy infestations, American extension services often advise targeted use of Bacillus thuringiensis (BT), an ingested biological insecticide, very effective against young caterpillars. As with any product aimed at butterfly larvae, it is best used sparingly, only when defoliation truly threatens the harvest.
