Increasingly, experts on social media are advising that for hair care one should rely on natural products already at hand at home, rather than pricey cosmetic products that aren’t free from dubious chemical ingredients.

Apple cider vinegar has many distinct uses in hair care. Its acidic properties make it a handy ally for balancing the scalp, taming frizz, correcting shade errors and supporting natural anti-lice treatments.

Vinegar reduces frizz and enhances definition

Curly hair tends to be drier and more porous, making it particularly prone to frizz, the buildup of residue from shampoos and other hair-care products, which leads to a loss of definition.

That is exactly why Jenn Saa, a specialist in natural curl care, emphasises that diluted apple cider vinegar can be a great ally for improving curl texture without resorting to heavy formulas. The acidic pH of vinegar helps to close the cuticle, leaving the curl visually more even, shinier and looser.

Saa recommends incorporating it at the end of the wash, in a gentle mixture that acts for a few minutes before being left in rather than rinsed out. The improvements in softness and shine are usually visible from the first use, especially for hair types 3 and 4, which respond particularly well to this kind of care.

Calming the scalp and refreshing the curls

Another advantage of vinegar is its ability to relieve itching and the sensation of heaviness when products accumulate or there is light flaking. According to Jenn Saa, a gentle massage helps to cleanse the follicle without irritating it and to restore balance to the scalp, always avoiding overuse to prevent drying.

Moreover, vinegar can be used as a refreshing spray between washes. Combined with water and aloe vera, it helps to restore the curl’s shape and control frizz without wetting the hair completely or adding excess products.

Correcting excess dye with apple cider vinegar

The professional hairdresser Sara Pérez explains that vinegar can also be key in colouring, particularly when a shade has turned too dark, ash or saturated. Applying it shortly after dyeing helps lift the pigment that has not yet fully set.

To use it safely, she recommends mixing one part apple cider vinegar with two parts water, applying to damp hair for a few minutes and then rinsing well. This procedure corrects the error without damaging the hair fibre and, in addition, adds shine by sealing the cuticle.

Pérez also notes a very common error, such as applying conditioner immediately after the shade. With an acidic pH, it can drag pigments before they bond, weakening the colour. Therefore, she suggests waiting at least 48 hours before using intensive treatments.

An ally against head lice

The expert in natural beauty formulations and educator Victoria Moradell has tried a multitude of solutions to combat head lice, especially as a mother of four children.

Her experience has led her to rely on a natural anti-lice combination with apple cider vinegar, in which its acidity helps to loosen the nits and makes their removal easier during washing.

Moradell combines the vinegar with coconut oil, neem oil and essential oils of tea tree and lavender. Each ingredient plays a role, from soothing the scalp to acting as a natural antiparasitic, contributing to an effective blend without resorting to overly harsh substances.

Application and added benefits

The treatment involves spreading the mixture over dry hair and leaving it to act for between thirty minutes and an hour, or even overnight to maximise the effect. Afterwards, wash the hair well to remove the oil residues. This formula not only eliminates head lice but also leaves the hair soft, shiny and balanced, which is why Moradell uses it even as a preventative measure.

How to use vinegar without damaging the hair

Although it has multiple benefits, all specialists agree that vinegar should be used with caution. It should never be applied neat, but always diluted, and daily use is not advised. In addition, you should avoid it if the scalp is irritated or sensitive.

You can rinse your hair weekly to control frizz, apply it topically if you need to correct a shade after recent colouring, or if you need to deal with a lice outbreak. Used in this way, as a versatile tool rather than a universal solution, it can visibly improve your hair with results that are noticeable from the first use.
