When autumn arrives, we close the windows, turn the heating back on, and the house becomes cozier. In the bathroom, this change of rhythm traps the water vapor: mirrors fog up, walls stay damp longer, towels dry poorly. In certain corners, a grayish veil seems to settle. And sometimes, if you look closely, that veil actually moves.
This veil isn’t always dust: it may be countless mold mites that feed on microscopic fungal stains on the joints and tiles. These tiny creatures, such as the species Tyrophagus putrescentiae, love the warm, humid climate typical of autumn mornings. Good news, there is a very simple trick, based on baking soda, which costs less than 3 € and works in just 15 minutes. The key move is prepared in the kitchen.
Acariens de moisissure dans la salle de bains : comment les repérer
To understand what we’re dealing with, you first need to know how to recognize them. A mold mite measures less than 0.5 millimeters, almost transparent, thus virtually invisible to the naked eye when viewed individually. On the other hand, when the colony settles on a damp joint, it takes the form of a gray or beige, slightly powdery film that seems to ripple. Seeing this living carpet is a clear signal that the room remains too humid, especially around the shower or the bathtub.
For the bathroom expert Colm Lalor, from the Nuie brand, the message is clear: “If you spot mold mites, treat the problem at the source to be sure you don’t accidentally create a cozy microclimate where they can thrive,” he explains. In other words, these tiny beings develop only where mildew has already found enough water to grow. Detecting them on tile joints, silicone sealant, or around the siphon therefore indicates that behind them there is persistent condensation, infiltration, or a light leak.

Before buying a specialized product, Colm Lalor recommends turning to baking soda, sold in supermarkets for less than 2 British pounds in the United Kingdom, about 2.30 €, and often under 3 € in France. You simply need to mix a little powder with water to form a thick paste. Apply it generously to the affected areas, paying particular attention to the tile joints and the silicone bands around the tub or shower. Then just let it sit for 15 minutes.
Once this time has elapsed, gently scrub with a grout brush or an old toothbrush, taking care not to scratch the surface, then wipe or rinse. The baking soda acts as a very mild abrasive that helps detach the mildew on which the mold mites feed. The decisive step comes right after: thoroughly dry the surface with a clean, dry cloth. “While it is useful to treat the problem in isolation, it is also important to think about how you dry your bathroom to prevent mold and mites from returning,” details Colm Lalor.

To dry the air, your bathroom extractor fan becomes your best ally. Leave it running for 15 to 20 minutes after every shower instead of turning it off when you step out. Regularly clean the grille with the vacuum nozzle, because dust and lint significantly reduce the airflow.
In the long term, also hunt down hidden water sources: a dripping faucet, a cracked shower hose, a worn sealing joint. If the same area keeps staining, have the installation checked by a professional. Finally, don’t leave towels and mats piled up: hang them immediately, ideally on a warm towel rail, to limit the moisture available for mildew and mold mites.
