Small Living Room: Do You Still Have an Old Corner Sofa? This New Design Replaces It Everywhere

In many living rooms, the reflex remains the same: tucking a large L-shaped corner sofa into the corner to “save space.” For years, this bulky piece symbolized family comfort and a clever use of square meters. Yet in a small apartment, this rigid block often ends up dictating traffic flow and stifling the living area.

Signals of change are multiplying. In Spain, the site Okdiario notes that “classic L-shaped sofas are gradually disappearing from Spanish homes” in favor of newer designs. These newcomers favor rounded lines and separated modules, conceived to better use every square meter and to keep sightlines open in small living rooms.

Why the L-shaped corner sofa suffocates a small living room

Older corner models were designed to hug the walls and offer maximum seating. In the reality of a 15 m² living room, they often block the passage to the kitchen or balcony. Okdiario sums up the criticism: “old L-shaped sofas are rigid, straight-edged, and tend to swallow up the living room space,” to the point of turning the relaxation corner into a bulky mass.

Such a sofa creates two long right-angled arms that force you to go around the furniture. When the room is narrow, every corner truncates the perspective and makes the living area feel full, even though there is little space left for a coffee table or a desk. The famous L-shaped corner sofa suits a large rectangular living room, but is far less fitting for a studio.

Modular curved sofa: the new shape that frees up the living room

Decorators are turning to another family of designs: the modular curved sofa, made up of several independent seating sections. “Curved sofas allow you to reorganize the living room on the spot, adding or removing elements as needed,” summarizes Okdiario. Unlike the L-shaped corner sofa, these rounded sofas lighten the volume seen from the doorway and create seating in an arc, a crescent, or a central island depending on how the modules are aligned.

Okdiario describes a trend toward soft silhouettes, without hard angles. This shape improves circulation around the furniture and avoids the crushing sensation created by the bulky armrests of traditional corner groups. Adaptability follows: in case of moving to a smaller apartment or a different configuration, the modules can be rearranged along a wall or in the center, while maintaining a convivial living room oriented toward conversation.

How to choose a modular curved sofa that is convertible in a small apartment

In a compact flat, the living room sofa often also serves as a bed. ELLE magazine reminds us that “the convertible sofa is among the essentials for a small apartment.” To pick it well, one must carefully consider the sleeping arrangement and the opening mechanism. For occasional use, a “three-fold” sofa bed can be suitable, even though this model “cannot accommodate a mattress thicker than about six centimeters.”

For daily sleeping use, ELLE recommends a mattress about 15 cm thick with a stated density of around 30 kg/cm², close to a real bed. To keep things simple, the “Rapido” system that keeps the back cushions and the seat cushions in place is suitable for daily use. The sofa bed is described as “the ally of small spaces and first apartments”: one should avoid cluttering the area around the sofa and opt for small, lightweight, easy-to-move furniture, ideally aiming for a model with a storage compartment to hide the duvet and pillows upon waking. The article also mentions the sofa-bed bench and the convertible pouf, useful for adding an extra sleeping surface without sacrificing floor space.
