56-Year-Old Dermatologist María Agustina Segurado: Nivea Blue Tin Cream Is Perfect for Hydrating Skin After Sun Exposure, But After-Sun Is Still Better for Refreshing It

Every summer the same debate resurfaces. Is it enough to apply a moisturizer after a day at the beach or by the pool, or is it essential to reach for an after-sun product? Among the items that spark the most controversy is the classic blue-tin Nivea cream, a staple in many homes for decades and which, according to experts, can be a good ally for caring for the skin after sun exposure, albeit with some caveats.

The dermatologist María Agustina Segurado (56) explains that the well-known cream can be used after sun exposure thanks to its composition, especially when the skin needs to recover the hydration lost. «The blue-tin Nivea cream is perfect for hydrating the skin after sun exposure, but the after sun is still better if you’re looking to refresh it», notes the specialist.

Why the Nivea cream helps repair the skin after sun exposure

Sun exposure triggers water loss in the skin and can alter its barrier function, even if a burn does not occur. Therefore, once the day is over, it is advisable to apply a product that helps restore that skin barrier and ease the tight, uncomfortable sensation. In this sense, Segurado highlights that the Nivea cream contains ingredients with reparative and hydrating properties. «It contains ingredients such as dexpanthenol or glycerin that help to repair and regenerate the skin barrier and also act as soothing agents», explains the dermatologist.

According to Segurado, dexpanthenol, also known as provitamin B5, is a common ingredient in products designed to promote skin repair, while glycerin is one of the most effective humectants for attracting and retaining water in the superficial layers of the epidermis. Thanks to this combination, the specialist considers the cream particularly useful when the skin has endured external aggression. «It is a good option for skin that is worn or irritated, such as in the case of sun exposure», she says.

That said, it is worth remembering that no cosmetic product can replace proper sun protection. If there is a significant burn, with blisters, intense pain or general symptoms, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional.

The main difference between the Nivea cream and an ‘after-sun’

Although the classic moisturizer can perfectly fulfill its role, Segurado recognizes that after-sun products offer a notable advantage related to the user experience. «The only drawback can be the texture», she warns.

While the Nivea cream stands out for its high nourishing capacity, it also leaves a denser film on the skin. This makes some people not find it comfortable right after being exposed to heat. «There will be people with sunburned or irritated skin who prefer textures like that of the after sun, lighter and more refreshing», she explains.

After-sun products usually incorporate a greater amount of water in their formulation and, in many cases, ingredients with a refreshing effect, such as aloe vera or soothing agents that provide an immediate sense of relief when applied.

What product to choose after sun exposure

The choice largely depends on personal preferences and the condition of the skin. «There are people who, on the contrary, prefer the sensation of applying a more hydrating product that leaves the skin feel oilier, as the Nivea cream does on the body level», adds the dermatologist.

Ultimately, if the main goal is to replenish hydration and help repair the skin barrier after moderate sun exposure, the blue-tin Nivea cream can be a perfectly valid alternative thanks to ingredients such as dexpanthenol and glycerin. On the other hand, those seeking a lighter application and an immediate sense of refreshment will probably feel more comfortable using an after sun product.

In any case, the expert reminds that the best treatment for the skin remains prevention. Using an appropriate sunscreen, reapplying it every two hours, avoiding the hottest hours of the day, and staying well hydrated are the most effective measures to minimize the damage caused by solar radiation.
