A Manchester start-up expects to double its turnover by the end of the year after receiving support from Business Growth Hub, part of Manchester Growth Company.
ViewItUK was set up by Prof Michael Donmall and Dr Andrew Jones at the University of Manchester, supported by Dr Yousef Taktak, to service a niche market in data management analysis, visualisation and reporting.
The support offered by the Hub meant ViewItUK saw income increase by 50% to £100,000 last year, with the founders expecting that figure to double by the end of this year, and reach £500,000 by the end of 2018.
The company’s context is within the University of Manchester Division of Population Health which has multi-million pound contracts in the healthcare sector. The management team has worked extensively with Public Health England and other government departments over two decades analysing and managing complex health data sets. ViewitUK has grown out of these initiatives and currently has contracts including The British Society for Cutaneous Allergy and GambleAware. The team hopes to gain more contracts with a current focus on health organisations.
The Hub was initially approached by the University in 2014 to investigate the potential behind developing a commercial enterprise using the technology of data visualisation and mapping that focused on contracts relating to allergy and other health-related programmes using specific source code technology. Using this technology, ViewItUK provides online data portals and straightforward analysis and presentation tools that enable health professionals and commissioners to assess and monitor treatment engagement and effectiveness, essential for patient wellbeing.
As interest in the business then grew, the Hub began to offer further strategic support to the company so it could meet its forecasted turnover and expand its customer base beyond the health sector. This was achieved by working with Prof Donmall and Dr Jones to develop a growth strategy which focused on turnover and service development, as well as staffing, marketing and potential competitors.
Founding director Prof Michael Donmall said: “Thanks to the support offered by Business Growth Hub, we have been able to adapt our pricing structure, generate more customer meetings and further develop the business.
“Our new data visualisation and data solutions are expanding in our target markets. By adapting our internal processes and concentrating on innovation and new patented software development, we’re determined to push for more growth in these sectors.”
Head of Growth Services, Janine Smith, at the Hub said: “Michael and Andrew knew there was a niche in the market that they had the technical know-how to exploit, but lacked some of the necessary business skills.
“With our help, they have been able to grow ViewItUK’s customer base and revenues at a much faster rate than anticipated, meaning they can now forecast further growth and employment.”
